Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about knee bracing? Our certified specialists have answered the most common questions from our osteoarthritis and athlete patients.

For osteoarthritis, the most effective brace depends on which compartment of the knee is affected. Unloader (offloading) braces are the gold standard for medial or lateral compartment OA — they redistribute weight away from the damaged side of the joint, reducing pain and improving function. Brands like Bauerfeind, DonJoy, and Ossur offer excellent OA-specific options. A softer compression sleeve can help with mild diffuse OA by improving proprioception and warmth. We recommend a professional fitting to ensure correct alignment and maximum benefit.

Yes — research shows that a properly fitted unloader brace can significantly reduce pain and improve daily function for many OA patients, allowing them to delay or in some cases avoid total knee replacement (TKR). Bracing is most effective when combined with physiotherapy, weight management, and appropriate activity modification. It is not a permanent fix for severe structural damage, but it is a well-supported conservative treatment option recommended by most orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists as a first-line intervention.

Custom-fabricated braces are moulded specifically to your limb geometry and provide the most precise alignment correction, which is critical for OA offloading. They are recommended for patients with significant deformity (varus or valgus angulation), complex anatomy, or those who have found off-the-shelf braces ineffective. Off-the-shelf braces from brands like Bauerfeind or DonJoy are an excellent and more affordable starting point for many patients and can deliver substantial relief. Our clinicians will assess your X-rays and limb alignment to advise which option is most appropriate for you.

An unloader brace applies a three-point bending force across the knee joint to shift load away from the damaged compartment (typically the medial/inner side) toward the healthier compartment. This reduces compressive forces on the arthritic cartilage, which directly reduces pain and inflammation. Most unloader braces have an adjustable valgus or varus correction strap that allows our clinicians to fine-tune the amount of offloading. Many patients report noticeable pain reduction within the first few days of consistent wear.

Many extended health benefit plans (including those through Sun Life, Manulife, Green Shield, and Great-West Life) cover orthopaedic braces under their orthotics or durable medical equipment (DME) benefits. Coverage amounts and requirements vary by plan — some require a physician or physiotherapist referral, and some have annual maximums. We provide detailed receipts and product documentation to support your insurance claim. We recommend calling your benefits provider before your appointment to confirm your coverage limits. We are happy to assist you with the paperwork.

Most patients see the best results wearing their OA brace during all weight-bearing activities — typically 6 to 10 hours per day. You do not need to wear it while sleeping or resting with your leg elevated. Begin with shorter wear times (2–3 hours) to allow your skin and muscles to adapt, then gradually increase. If you experience skin irritation, pressure points, or increased pain, contact our clinic so we can adjust the fit. Consistent daily use is key — occasional use provides limited benefit.

The knee joint has three compartments: medial (inner), lateral (outer), and patellofemoral (kneecap). Medial compartment OA — the most common type — causes a bow-legged (varus) deformity, and an unloader brace is set to apply a valgus correction to shift load outward. Lateral compartment OA causes a knock-knee (valgus) deformity and requires a brace set to apply a varus correction. Getting the correction direction wrong will worsen your symptoms. This is why a proper clinical assessment and fitting is essential before purchasing an OA brace.

After ACL reconstruction, your surgeon and physiotherapist will guide your bracing protocol, which typically progresses through three phases: post-operative/rehabilitative bracing (locked or hinged ROM brace immediately post-surgery), functional bracing (during return-to-sport activities), and sometimes prophylactic bracing for ongoing protection. Popular post-ACL functional braces include the DonJoy Defiance, Ossur CTi, and Bauerfeind SecuTec Genu. The right brace depends on your graft type, sport, and timeline. We work closely with orthopaedic surgeons and physio teams to coordinate your bracing plan.

Yes — functional and prophylactic knee braces are specifically designed for sport participation. They provide stability, reduce re-injury risk, and give athletes confidence to perform at full intensity. Custom braces are generally preferred for high-impact or pivoting sports (hockey, football, skiing, soccer) because they offer better fit and durability under dynamic loads. Many professional and elite athletes wear custom braces as part of their regular training. Off-the-shelf functional braces are a good option for recreational athletes. Always consult with your surgeon or physiotherapist before returning to sport.

Prophylactic braces are worn by healthy athletes to prevent injury — commonly used in football and hockey. They protect against lateral (MCL) stress. Functional braces are designed for athletes who have had a ligament injury (ACL, MCL, PCL) — they provide stability during sport and reduce the risk of re-injury. Rehabilitative braces are worn post-surgery to control range of motion and protect healing tissue during recovery. They are typically hinged with adjustable ROM settings. Our clinicians can help you determine which category fits your situation and recommend the best product within that category.

Custom brace fitting requires specific circumference and length measurements taken at multiple points on your thigh and lower leg, plus assessment of your limb alignment. We take all measurements in-clinic using manufacturer-specified protocols to ensure optimal fit. For some custom braces (such as the DonJoy Defiance Pro or Ossur CTi), we take a detailed scan or cast of your limb. The entire fitting process takes approximately 30–45 minutes. Custom braces typically arrive within 2–4 weeks of ordering. Please wear form-fitting shorts to your appointment.

No prescription is required to purchase a knee brace from our store. However, if you plan to submit the cost to extended health insurance, your provider may require a prescription or referral from a physician, physiotherapist, or chiropractor. We recommend checking with your insurer in advance. Our certified bracing specialists can conduct a clinical assessment and provide appropriate documentation to support your claim. For post-surgical bracing, we always recommend coordinating with your surgical team for their specific bracing protocol.

Patellar tracking disorders — including patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and chondromalacia — respond well to braces that apply a lateral-to-medial buttress to guide the kneecap into proper alignment. The Bauerfeind GenuTrain P3, DonJoy Lateral J Brace, and Ossur FormFit ROM Patella are strong options. A patellar stabilizing strap (available separately) can also provide targeted relief. Taping techniques (McConnell taping) are a useful complement. We recommend a physiotherapy assessment to address contributing biomechanical factors alongside bracing.

Post-operative bracing timelines are set by your surgeon and depend on the procedure performed. After ACL reconstruction, a locked or hinged ROM brace is typically worn for 4–6 weeks. After meniscus repair, the brace protocol varies by repair type and may extend to 6–8 weeks. After total knee replacement (TKR), a brace is sometimes used short-term for swelling control and confidence. Always follow your surgeon's specific protocol — our team can source the right brace quickly and help with any fit adjustments during your recovery.

Each brace brand has its own sizing chart based on knee circumference (measured at the center of the kneecap), thigh circumference, and sometimes calf circumference. Measure yourself while standing, with your knee slightly flexed. When between sizes, a larger size usually provides more comfort; a smaller size provides more compression. Our product pages include the manufacturer's size guide. If you are unsure, contact us — we are happy to guide you through measurement over the phone or via email. Getting the right size is critical for comfort and performance.

Yes — in-person fitting is available at our clinic and is strongly recommended for custom braces, OA unloader braces, and post-surgical bracing. Our certified orthopaedic bracing specialists will assess your anatomy, review your imaging or surgical notes if available, and fit the brace to your limb. Appointments typically take 30–60 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome for standard off-the-shelf products, but an appointment ensures dedicated one-on-one time. Please call or use our online booking form to schedule your fitting.

Most soft knee braces and sleeves can be hand-washed in cool water with mild soap and air-dried flat — never put them in the dryer, as heat damages elastic fibres. Rigid or hinged braces should be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild cleaner; the metal hinges and straps should be kept dry to prevent corrosion and deterioration. Remove the brace before bathing or swimming unless it is specifically rated as waterproof. Check straps and Velcro regularly for wear. With proper care, a high-quality brace should last 12–24 months of regular use. Manufacturer care guides are included with each product.
