Materials

The Defiance III is custom fabricated from a strong, lightweight hollow carbon composite frame, making it one of the lightest functional knee braces available at approximately 18 oz (510 g). The frame incorporates a swooping medial thigh cuff for inner-thigh clearance, which also accommodates bilateral use. Internally mounted swiveling strap tabs allow the straps to move with the leg without catching or impeding performance. The brace uses DonJoy's patented 4-Points-of-Leverage system and is available with either a standard hinge or the patented FourcePoint hinge for enhanced ACL protection.

A supra-condyle suspension pad grabs the bony contour of the inside of the knee to help prevent the brace from migrating down the leg. An anti-migration band on the upper calf provides additional anchoring. Liners and condyle pads are available in suede or chamois materials and are removable for cleaning. All hardware is non-corrosive, making the brace suitable for use in fresh and salt water.

Three strap configurations are available: ACL (5 straps), PCL (4 straps), and Combined Instability/CI (6 straps). A Defiance III Extra version is available with a reinforced carbon composite frame and slide shield, recommended for contact sports such as football. Optional PowerCaps metal strap tab caps and high-strength stainless steel gears are available for added durability in contact sports.

The brace is fully custom-made using the CCMI Mark III measuring tool and is available in three frame lengths: standard, short, and standard thigh with short calf. Over 40 custom frame colours and graphics options are available.

Care Instructions

Soft goods (liners, pads, straps):
Remove liners and condyle pads from the brace before cleaning. Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with cold water to remove all soap. Air dry only — do not apply heat to dry liners or pads, as this will cause damage.

Frame and hinges:
The brace is fully waterproof and may be used in fresh or salt water. After water use, drain the brace thoroughly, rinse all components with clean fresh water, and air dry. Wipe the frame and hinge components with a damp cloth for general cleaning. Oiling the hinges is not necessary under normal use; however, a dry Teflon lubricant (such as Triflow or White Lightning) may be applied to the internal hinge mechanism after water use to prevent wear. Periodically inspect hinge screws for tightness and retighten as needed using a Phillips head screwdriver.

General:
Apply the brace directly to skin, not over clothing. Do not machine wash any component. Do not expose to excessive heat. If hinges become difficult to move or do not function normally, contact your DonJoy representative — this may be a covered warranty issue.

Warranty

The Defiance III carries a 5-year warranty on the frame and hinges, and a 6-month warranty on all soft components including straps, pads, and covers. A free re-measure and remake is available within 4 months of delivery if the fit needs to be adjusted (for example, in growing patients). This brace is custom-made and is non-returnable.
